An Enlightened Ego

If you have an enlightenment experience or a peak experience, the ego can’t wait to claim it for itself. The ego then thinks it is enlightened. It is very difficult to free yourself from an enlightened ego. Of course, the ego can never be enlightened, but it can think it is.

If the ego thinks it’s enlightened, then relate to your ego lightly and playfully. Ham it up. Look into the mirror and ask,

“Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the most enlightened of them all?”

“Me, me, me,” says the ego.

“Yes ego, you are the most enlightened of them all.”

The ego will be satisfied and will begin to relax. The approach I take with the ego is not to reject, deny or judge the ego, but always to be playfully friendly towards it. I don’t judge it or reject it, but at the same time, I don’t believe anything the ego brings up to take me out of Presence.

If anyone claims to be enlightened, I simply ask them, “Who is enlightened?”

The only possible answer is ‘I AM’ which takes them out of the thought or idea that they are enlightened to a state of perfect silence and Presence. At this level, the word 'enlightenment' dissolves into eternal and infinite silence. Now you are beyond all definition. You cannot be defined. You are neither this nor that.
